This made-for-cable movie takes some liberties with the Jules Verne novel. Although Michael Caine is great as Captain Nemo, the movie adds the character of his daughter Mara (Mia Sara of LEGEND, FERRIS BUELLER), which somehow diminishes his presence. Rather than a man who has lost everything and shuns the land because of his loss, he's now a father who is looking out for his isolated daughter. Patrick Dempsey is the "hero" of the movie, and much of the movies' conflict revolves around him and his Professor Father, who constantly derides him. Most surprising, though, is that there's no giant squid attack of the Nautilus. Instead, a few characters are killed by a large octopus that lives in the ruins of Atlantis. This version of the novel isn't a terrible movie by any means, it's simply that the Disney version with James Mason as Nemo and the more recent version starring Ben Cross as the Captain, are much better.
