This discovery channel faux documentary, based upon author/illustrator Wayne Barlowe's book, EXTRATERRESTRIAL, is very similar to THE FUTURE IS WILD in structure. The program speculates how a robotic craft will be the first to venture upon an alien habitable world-and transmit images back to its creators on Earth. These computer-animated scenes are inter-cut with scientific experts" opinions on how such a venture would play out and the likelihood of the alien creatures.
Several robot probes land, with the first destroyed in the atmosphere. The other two split up and explore. They first come across a hostile carnivore, analogous to a T-Rex, but it leaves them alone when they pose no threat. A herbivore, looking somewhat like an antelope gets its attention and we see how it hunts. They come across weird plants and trees, more herd-like animals and eventually to the planet's most intelligent creatures. These are huge, squid-like creatures, at the technology level of cavemen. It's also the last images transmitted back to Earth.
I found this to be quite a cool program. If you've enjoyed other computer-animated documentaries like WALKING WITH DINOSAURS, WALKING WITH CAVEMEN, and pseudo documentaries such as THE FUTURE IS WILD, you'll assuredly enjoy this one.
