Robert Durst (Ryan Gosling), heir to a real estate empire, falls in love with Kathie McCormack (Kirsten Dunst of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE). At first, it seems as if they are perfect for one another. That is, until he agrees to work for his overbearing father (Frank Langella of DRACULA). They move back to New York City and he hates his job. They live in a huge, expensive apartment, though she doesn't really care where they live-- she's in love with him. But when she asks him if he's ever thought of having kids, he says that he never wants them. This has to do with witnessing watching his mother commit suicide in front of him, when he was seven years old. When Kathie gets pregnant he forces her to have an abortion--and from that point on they become distant, leading separate lives. While he lives in the city, doing some shady dealings, she lives at the country home. She goes to college and gets accepted to medical school while he gets more resentful and withdrawn. It all culminates with him exploding at a family party, where he drags her out by the hair. She wants to leave him but he becomes more abusive, stranding her on the ledge of their high-rise apartment during a rain storm. Then, unemotionally killing his own dog. That same night she disappears, never to be seen again. The only thing he says to his father is that she's gone, just like his mother.
Twenty years later this unsolved case is reopened and Robert disappears, hiding out in a shitty apartment and dressing as a woman. He's flipped out, like Norman Bates from PSYCHO. And more people begin to die...
This psychological thriller is worth checking out simply for the extremely creepy performance by Gosling. Recommended.
