The best horror in the 21st century is on the small screen for sure and one needs not to look further than this classic haunted house tale in the fine traditions of THE SHINING. New family moves into a house with a bloody, murderous history (dating back to the 1800's where a FRANKENSTEIN-ish doctor committed his evil deeds) and you have a recipe for new destruction. Daddy is a shrink who cheated on his MILF wife, who gets pregnant again once in the house (and the 'occupants' of the home want the baby, of course) and there's plenty of tension there, with the bonus addition of a suicidal teen angst daughter stirred into the mix. Jessica Lange (scream queen for all ages, from 1976's splendid bare-breasted KING KONG damsel-in-distress start to her dazzling performance in this seasonal anthology show) is a next door neighbor with an unholy connection to the home. This season taps into about every depravity known to man: murder, rape, incest, infidelity, the God complex, ghosts, demons, Columbine, and a host of other unsavory things you couldn't even imagine being touched upon in an NC-17 film just a decade ago...but lo and behold, here it is, on the small screen, right in your face. Chalk full of nudity, swearing, hardcore gore that rivals anything unrated on the big or small screen, this show has it all and never failed to keep my attention or make me wonder what screwed up thing was going to happen next. Then there's the top notch acting that sells even the most cliche moments, and what you have here is just one of the most exciting, adrenaline rushing experiences you can have as a horror fan. The moment those opening credits come on with that Nine Inch Nails-ish theme (all created by the dude who did the opening credits for SEVEN) you will find yourself primed and ready for murder, lust, and mayhem in one of the best haunted house shows of all time. Experience it when you get the chance!
