The premise is familiar. One day huge, ominous space ships appear across the Earth. Are they friendly or have they come to invade our planet? In the United States one of the craft has landed in Montana. The army recruits linguist Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) to communicate with the aliens. Every 18 hours a hatch appears at the bottom of the craft, which allows the humans to go inside. They find themselves in a big room and the aliens behind a glass-like barrier. They look like giant squids. They communicate by shooting out ink-like liquid from their "hands", which form symbols. Eventually she figures out what they are trying to communicate. There's also love interest Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner of THE AVENGERS), a fellow scientist.
On one hand this is a very slow-moving movie. If you're expecting STAR WARS-type action this isn't he movie for you. However, if you want a solid, memorable and surprising movie that really knocks you out with the "surprise" ending, then check this out. In my opinion it's one of the best movies of 2016.
