Every decade or so I pop this movie in the vcr or dvd player in the hopes that it will be better than it is- unfortunately I'm always disappointed. This is because I loved the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. It's the early 1900's and David Innes (Doug McClure) and Abner Perry (Peter Cushing) travel to the center of the earth in the "Iron Mole", a machine that's able to plow through the planet. The emerge far beneath the ground into a prehistoric world, where they encounter cavemen and intelligent pterosaurs that feed on people. There's also Dia (Caroline Munro), who is David's love interest.
The movie sets are great, with giant mushrooms, weird plants and weirdly colored lights but the makeup effects and creatures are simply terrible, from the parrot-like carnivore they first encounter, to the odd looking Saggoths to the parrot beaked Mahars. They are all man-in-the-costume creatures and you can't overlook that, no matter how hard you try. Director Kevin Connor's LAND OF THE LOST and WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS are far better films.
