This animated Disney movie reminds me of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH and the 70's movie WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS, which is not a bad thing. And one of the script writers (there's like six or seven) is Joss Whedon (creator of BUFFY, ANGEL, FIREFLY), another plus going for it.The events take place in the early 1900's, about a museum curator named Milo Thatch who is given a chance to go on the trip of his dreams-to find the Lost City of Atlantis. A rich friend of his deceased grandfather funds the trip-and gives him the map that was left to him. Along on the adventure are a group of military types, a demolitions expert, a guy named 'Mole', who seems to be more animal than human, an African/Native American Doctor and a Puerto Rican female mechanic (have to cover as many ethnic groups as possible, I guess). There are a few sea monsters and the city itself is cool, as are its inhabitants, these dark skinned, white haired natives, who reminded me of New Zealand Maori. Of course, Milo falls in love with the Princess, who he ultimately has to protect from some of the shady characters he's with.I was surprised how many of the 'extra' characters, such as the crew of the submarine, were killed off in explosions, considering this is a Disney movie, but that's fine with me. ATLANTIS is a good adventure movie.
