"Baby Blood" is a nice piece of french "splatter" that I never really hear people talking about. I didn't find it "great", but it's a creative mix of bleak horror, gore, and oddball comedy, even if the overall concept wasn't all that 'original'...
A quiet, abused, buck toothed, somewhat sexy circus performer falls victim to a tentacled creature that burst from a tiger and inhabits her uterus. It's able to speak to her from inside her body and needs human blood to grow and eventually be born so it can evolve further.. from the sea. She escapes from the hard circus life and begins preying on men in the big city, via. seduction, to please the hungry beast...
While the story is extremely shallow, the gore flows hot and heavy, though never appearing entirely gratuitous or over-the-top. Emmanuelle Escourrou is very fitting as the female lead, whose dominant inner-being is both a source of great turmoil AND a close "child" of affection. She also displayed her full-on naked body several times! Personally, I didn't find her THAT attractive until she took her clothes off... Go figure. The movie reminded me a lot of Frank Hennenlotter's "Brain Damage" as well as bearing resemblance to "Basket Case" - both of which involved small mutant beings manipulating a timid "host". The ending is very abrupt, yet satisfying without ever showing too much, which worked effectively. Those who like obscure "splatter" flicks need to check out "Baby Blood".
