The name says it all here kids, it truly is a battle for the ages as school kids are forced to kill each other off in a nightmarish vision of Japan's future. A whole 9th grade class selected for slaughter gets taken to a remote island and forced to fight and kill each other off until only one is left. The winner is allowed to live and further their education. Talk about reality TV shows, this would be the king! This film boasts an impressive body count in the forty's and buckets of blood, more so than anything you're gonna see over here. As violent and raw as Battle Royale is, the most impressive part of the movie is the way in which the story unfolds and the kids are developed as characters. They really feel like and interact as a class would, with all the relationships and quirks you'd find at any high school. The movie does its best at depicting the way the kids deal with the horror surrounding them. At the beginning, each student is given a bag filled with items needed for survival, and a weapon. Some get shit weapons like a pot lid, while others get guns or knives. They have 3 days to kill down to one survivor or they all will be killed courtesy of the collars they have locked around their neck which track the kids and can be triggered to explode anytime. The whole premise here is great and the film flows fast soon after the kids find out what the hell is up. What's really fun is seeing which kids adapt to the slaughter and which can't seem to cope. For this decade, so far, Battle Royale is monumental stuff!
