Typically, I'm a fan of dark and obscure experimental/art-house films. Not necessarily in a cocky, film-school-hipster dick head kinda way, but just for the fact that I enjoy strange imagery and bleak forms of creativity. "Begotten" is one those kinds of flicks - going by a non-linear format and using some heavy, vastly incoherent symbolism...
Here's what I believe took place: A dude, apparently representing "God" and wearing Leatherface's "pretty woman" mask, disembowels himself with a straight-razor in long-ass scene which is proceeded by a woman who emerges from behind a chair. She jerks him off and inseminates herself with his cum wad before wandering the woods, eventually coming across a twitching man on the ground. He is taken by a group of mysterious hooded figures and tortured... and that's pretty much the rest of the movie...
The movie has a great scratchy, black and white look with no dialog or music. This certainly made for a very unsettling and dreamlike "experience" - like it could've been some kind of nightmarish snuff reel dug up from the 1910s. The first scene has got to be THE creepiest thing ever filmed! No shit! Unfortunately, the flick ran a LOT longer than it should have; most of the last half-hour or so being really tedious and confusing. I don't need to interpret all the symbolism precisely, but I at least want to know what the fuck I'm looking at once in a while.
"Begotten" is worth seeking out if you're like me and get into crazy, bizarro "art-house" shit, and I mean REALLY into it. If not, you're gonna be doing a lot of bitching and moaning. It's obviously a passionate effort and has an interesting (and highly morbid) visual style. However, I'd recommend "Subconscious Cruelty" or "Der Todesking" over this...
