This Americanized remake of the British series of the same name offers less than the original. My biggest gripe is the guy who is the werewolf (Sam Huntington) is a complete drip. You don't feel sorry for him at all. And the werewolf character was my favorite from the original series, so this is disappointing. Sam Witwer, who was so incredibly annoying during his year as Doomsday on SMALLVILLE a few years ago, is the vampire Aidan. Rather than a self-assured bloodsucker he's a wuss. And the ghost girl, Sally, leaves no impression whatsoever. All of these Canadian actors are so much weaker than their UK counterparts. Worst of all, the tone of the program is flat-- it's not nearly as fun since all the characters are mopey bastards. In fact, the most interesting character is the girl Aidan kills in the first episode, who returns as a very angry, evil vampire who wants nothing better to do than kill her own family and friends.
As far as the special effects, the werewolf transformation is obviously CGI and in a flashback scene in which the main vampire helps slaughter a party of humans they have "30 Days of Night" type vampire teeth. The ghost-effects, particularly the floating, is well done but so what?
Syfy Channel boasts that this is their "new original series" when in truth it's their "new non-original series" since it's a much inferior remake! After seeing the first two episodes of this pointless retreat I'm just going to wait for season three of the UK series.
