David Twohy's (PITCH BLACK) newest film takes place aboard a US submarine during WWII. The sub is ordered to pick up survivors of a destroyed hospital ship, of which there are only three. One of them turns out to be a British nurse, whose personality clashes with some of the crew. But as soon as this rescue is made odd things start happening aboard the ship, things which are connected to the sub's captain, who had died in an accident a few days previously. There's ghostly apparitions and the captain is haunting the crew-- but why? The surprise ending explains it all. BELOW works both as an action thriller and as a creepy ghost story. This is the movie that should have been released in theaters instead of GHOST SHIP, which was made at the same time.
