A local Filipino, Manuel, drops off supplies to a blonde woman on a remote island. The weird, big-eyed natives watch them from the forest beyond the beach. She pays him with rare black pearls which he tries to sell back in the city. This draws the attention of Eddie (Sig Haig of BONE TOMAHAWK, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS), a sleazy pimp and businessman who gets the information where they come from. A down and out diver, Logan (John Ashley of the BLOOD ISLAND movies), who has a gambling problem, finds out about this and pitches the idea they should look for the source of the pearls. So they put together a crew and sail to the island. Among them are a woman scientist, Dr Katherine Vernon, who wants to find a lost tribe of Atlantis. Her theory is that the Greek Minoans had colonized the area. Also, there's Vic (Patrick Wayne of SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER), another diver.
Once on the island Eddie falls into a pit of crabs that attack him. Meanwhile, Logan and Vic encounter the blonde haired woman, Syrene, will diving for the pearls. She can stay a VERY long time underwater. Then, the big-eyed natives come out of the ocean, an ominous threat. The crew learns that this is the island of Atari. Nereus, Syrene's father, invites them all to stay in their village guest house. They do find the black pearls but only because Syrene places them in the clams. What do they want?
Dr. Katherine tries talking to one of the weird natives but he doesn't answer her questions. Instead, he throws a young goat he was holding into a pond filled with piranhas. She screams and runs away, only to come to a temple where there's a similar looking Minoan mask she was studying, proof that these people are their descendants. The three guys--Eddie, Logan and Vic-fantasize about what they are going to do with their money. Eddie wants to buy a building and get his hooker girls off the streets, Logan wants broads and the other one says something just as foolish. We find out that Syrene must mate with one of these men to perpetuate their people. Her father gives her an ultimatum--she must mate, so she tries to seduce Vic, who is only interested in the lady scientist. It does not end well.
I always found this to be a very odd movie, mostly because it's so depressing. However, it is interesting and if you're a fan of Romero (Eddie, not George), you'll enjoy this flick.
