) This Stuart Gordon directed episode of 'Masters of Horror' is one of the best adaptations of Poe's story to date, featuring Jeffrey Combs (THE BEYOND, RE-ANIMATOR) as Edgar A. Poe. The story deftly combines the biographical story of Poe, of him trying to care for his sick, dying wife, while trying to come up with a new story for the publishers, which turns out to be the story of The Black Cat. Halfway through, the viewer isn't sure if what's going on is really happening or just in Poe's alchohol affected brain. Although the special effects don't happen well until a half hour, the cat eye gouging and the ax in the head will make you cringe.
