Although this movie is a little like Edgar Allen Poe's MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, it has much more in common with the movie THE BAT, which starred Bela Lugosi. The story concerns carnival barker Lampini, who does a pretty good Charles Nelson Reilly impersonation. He trains his 400 pound ape to kill when he smells bananas. He does this to kill a jewish jeweler who tried to rip him off, a racist auto mechanic who also tried to take advantage of him, and to his former girlfriend, who said she had enough of him and left him before he could propose. Of course, a few other people inadvertently get in the way of the psycho simian.
What really helps the movie--and gives it the feel of a 70's drive-in movie, is that it's shot on Super 8mm film, so it's suitably grainy. The ape costume is okay, as are the gore effects, but what works best is the movie's sense of humor. It is quite funny.
