Gris Grimly - writer and illustrator of children's fantasy books; often known for his Gothic style - has gone ahead and invested his recognizable flair for particularly dark creativity into film. "Cannibal Flesh Riot!" was a collaborative effort conceived by Grimly as well as former Necromantix guitarist, Peter Sandorff - who was looking to set his 'psychobilly' sound to some abstract and morbid imagery.
Stash and Hub are a duo of grave-robbing ghouls who we find prowling through an ominous cemetery in search of a specific burial site. Along the way, they engage in goofy Abbott and Costello type of conversation, only with nasty necro-cannibalistic themes and a profound wonder of all of the world's condiments. Once they reach their intended grave and dig up the corpse, things take a wild turn...
Clocking in at around a 34 minute run-time, "Cannibal Flesh Riot!" is perfectly paced for what it has to offer which is total low-budget entertainment. It was shot digitally and is set to a grainy, black and white look and is often blended with illustrated backgrounds, CGI (though sparse), and stop-motion animation. The two main characters - one with a major Igor complex and the other reminding me of a lot of Chop-Top - are amusingly 'hammy'. Overall, it's a pretty neat short film.
