The first ten minutes of this John Russo produced zombie flick are decent, fitting in with the mythos of the classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Zombies are seen wandering the Pennsylvania countryside and redneck hunters are shooting them down. Tom Savini, a mercenary, has it out with a dozen or so of them, even blowing up his own car to nail a few. But his luck runs out. He, and the local dufus Sheriff, decide to investigate a local farmhouse and come across a creature that seems to be an intelligent zombie. In fact, he was keeping a group of children in one of the animal pens. For food? Savini is bitten by the zombie and the sheriff shoots him so he won't come back as one of the Living Dead. Then, the movie skips fourteen years. From this point on the film is almost as bad as Russo's 'Special' edition of NOTLD, for several reasons. The first is the horrible casting of the actors--if the intention was to get the worst ones out there then the makers of this film have succeeded. The second reason is that it simply doesn't work having an 'intelligent' zombie wandering around and suddenly showing up after fourteen years, only to turn a van full of college students into the walking dead. And the third, and the truly amazing mistake, is the sub-par makeup effects, particularly for the zombie leader. It looks as if he's wearing a mask and oversize latex gloves. I just sat there shaking my head....Hopefully Russo won't get it in his mind to make 'BABIES OF THE LIVING DEAD' or 'PETS OF THE LIVING DEAD'...but I probably just gave him the idea.
