This Chinese science-fiction/fantasy film begins in 1979, at the Mongolian Border, where a group of laborers uncover huge fossils of unknown creatures. This expedition is run by Professor Yang, who has his own agenda about why he so desperately wants to locate the ruins of a lost civilization. He, along with his daughter Ping and a worker named Hu, discover an underground temple guarded by fire bats. If these bats land on you they'll cause you to burn up. But when Hu is attacked by them it later unleashes his latent supernatural abilities. The movie spans years, with Hu sequestering himself and learning all he can about these mythic people, who turn out to be aliens. He's eventually reunited with the Professor and his daughter, though under completely different circumstances that involve an X-Files-like organization. This film has great production value and special effects, though the tone of it is a bit weird. It is definitely worth checking out.
