A couple return home from a night out on the town and find a red box on the floor of their house. The husband opens it and is horrified at what he sees inside--and as he does it looks like someone grabs him. Then the movie goes to a new story, about a depressed handyman who is working for a wealthy family. He's also a thief and has been casing the place for five months. When his wife says she owes money to some loan sharks that night, he decides to rob the house and get her the money. He thinks it will be easy and that the family is gone on vacation.
While he's cracking the safe he hears someone else break in. He closes up the safe and tries to leave but he finds himself locked in. He thinks the other intruder is on to him so he hides--but finds the owner of the house, all bloody and tortured. The guy tries to leave but is caught in a trap, dragged across the house and dropped down the stairs. The burglar had thought the family went on vacation but they didn't. The wife is even bound in the bathtub, awaiting some fate. Why is this happening? Some is explained when he finds yet another guy, the exterminator, who says that the intruder only kills those he doesn't want to collect. Hence, the title. I just didn't buy the premise and I find it very unlikely he's able to rig up all those traps in so short an amount of time. THE COLLECTOR is surprisingly boring. It's a robbery movie that's trying, for some inexplicable reason, to be a SAW movie.
