Just as PACIFIC RIM was inspired by Godzilla and Giant Robot series, this period ghost story, which takes place at the turn of the 20th Century, is heavily influenced by Hammer Films. Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is wooed by Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). He's on a business trip with his creepy sister, Lucille (Jessica Chasten), in order to get investors for his family business, which mines clay. Edith's father finds out a secret about Thomas but before he can tell her he's brutally murdered. Months later we see that Edith and Thomas have married-and she's moving into his huge, creepy, falling-apart mansion in rural England. She sees some extremely disturbing ghosts and eventually uncovers Thomas' secret. I wasn't completely surprised about this revelation but that's okay.
CRIMSON PEAK is a very effective and visually beautiful ghost story. Highly recommended.
