I had high hopes for Stuart Gordon's newest movie, DAGON. His other Lovecraft adaptations--REANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND, were extremely enjoyable and creepy movies. DAGON isn't. The first forty minutes are extremely difficult to get through--the spanish actors are all pretty bad, the digital effects abysmal, and the main characater is very unlikeable. But after the hump, when the movie consists of a series of chases as the hero tries to get his girlfriend back, things improve and the movie becomes genuinely creepy. There's also a few extremely gory scenes that made me cringe. So, if you're a Lovecraft fan you might like the whole people-turning into a fish idea but if you're looking for an enjoyable horror film, well, this isn't it. Dagon-it!
