Nick Di Santo (Luke Kleintank of the TV series BONES) visits his crazy mother (Lesley-Anne Down) in the mental institution on his 23rd birthday. He hasn't seen her in years. As soon as she sees him she tells him that he looks just like his father, which gets him angry because she had always told him that she didn't know who his father was. He leaves, but not before she touches him. This gives him a vision of someone on fire, which later comes true. Later, he and his best friend, Ryan, go to a bar where someone recognizes him. We learn that Nick has a supernatural talent--he can see people's deaths. And he sees a guy, who insists on knowing, killed in combat. This bar is also where he meets a woman, Eve, who is immune to his abilities. She's a woman he can touch without wearing gloves. That evening, on the news, he sees that his mother's mental institution has burned down.
Eight months later he goes to a lawyer to get folder left to him by his mother. It has photos of a house he used to draw as a kid. He believes it's a key to his past--and it is. It's the house he grew up in--and he's inherited it. So he, Eve (now eight months pregnant) and Ryan go to find it. At a local diner they learn that the town of River's End had washed away in a flood twenty-years before. And there's a legend that this house, "Wormwood House", survived and simply moved with the flood. The trio go looking for the house anyway and come across three County land surveyors who agree to help them look. They come across a wide path in the woods and follow it--to the sinister looking house. It appears as if a huge oak tree had stopped its movement. But there's someone living there, a crazy looking man named Seth (SAW's Tobin Bell). He tells Nick that he can come in and lets him look around. There are strange sounds of something living in the walls and the guy won't answer any questions. Seth tells him to leave. Outside, where Eve and Ryan are waiting, similar looking men appear, brandishing big axes. They are chased off and one of the surveyors is killed. They barely escape and go back to town--but the town is abandoned. They just can't see anyone and no one in town can see them, as if they are in a different dimension. They drive away, get in an accident and find themselves back at the house. Then, it gets weirder.
I was surprised how good this movie is. It starts off as one thing and then becomes something completely different, which is always a plus. It's hard to surprise me with "twists" in a movie. If you're looking for one of the best horror flicks of 2014 check out DARK HOUSE. Highly recommended.
