This overly long, tedious movie is the biggest disappointment of the Summer, with an over-hyped performance by deceased actor Heath Ledger as The Joker.
Wayne Mansion still has to be rebuilt, so Bruce Wayne is living in his Gotham City penthouse with Alfred. Love interest Rachel Dawes is dating DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), so there's sort of a love triangle there. And The Joker shows up, shooting people and planting bombs around the city. He tries to make people commit crimes in order to save their own lives, sort of the idea behind the SAW movies.
The violence and action is so much the same throughout the movie that it only blurs together. Batman comes off flat and doesn't have enough screen time. Also, the casting of Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel, formerly portrayed by Katie Holmes, is way off center and not once do you believe all these guys are drooling after her. Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker is interesting and makes you compare him with Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson, but too much time is spent on this one-dimensional character. The biggest problem, though, is that the movie is about an hour too long. I caught myself dozing off several times and that's never a good sign.
