This television pilot from producer Gerry Anderson has the special effects we've seen in SPACE 1999 but is much more kid-oriented, along the lines of the 60's LOST IN SPACE. It's in the near future and two families are sent aboard a deep space craft to explore the galaxy. There are the Bowens-Tom (Brian Blessed), Anna and their son David, and Captain Harry Masters (Nick Tate) and his daughter Jane. They are going to be traveling at speeds no one has gone before and will be away for over 40 years earth-time by the time they return. Once they get to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, they have to make a decision on whether to go back or proceed onwards-and they choose to go ahead. Unfortunately they hit a meteor shower which affects their photon drive-and it begins to accelerate. They pass out and when they awaken the power is off, except life support, and they have no idea where they are. The computer can't recognize any of the stars. Plus, if the captain can't repair the ship they'll drift into a nearby star and burn up. They do manage to repair it and decide to go back to Earth after contacting a distant beacon-but are caught in the gravity of a black hole and emerge into a completely different, strange looking universe. I found the show entertaining but wanted a little bit more action.
