Alice (Brittany Murphy) is a screenwriter who is staying at a big old house to finish a new script. She's recovering from an abusive relationship from a guy named Ben and is terrified that he'll find her. A friend of hers, who is more than a friend, drops her off. That first night she gets creeped out and has a weird dream. When she wakes up she explores the house and finds a box of home movies. Fortunately she brought her camera so she can play the tapes--and it appears to be the couple who previously lived in the house.
The movie cuts back and forth to Alice and the events that presumably happened in the house years before. At first it's seen through the home movies but then cuts to an actual flashback in which the viewer sees the husband (Marc Blucas) endlessly videotaping his new wife (Thora Birch). The is recently pregnant and he says he wants to record everything for the child. The wife doesn't like being videotaped but he doesn't listen to her. In fact, he becomes more and more paranoid that she's somehow cheating on him because he's not paying enough attention to her. He's practically stalking her in their own home. And since Alice keeps on seeing the woman's ghost it looks like there's not going to be a happy ending with this particular relationship.
DEADLINE is very low key and moody. Those scenes with Blucas and Birch are very uncomfortable. It's a good little ghost story which should have a better title. There are 40 previous movies with the title DEADLINE!
