This movie does exactly what a high intensity thriller is supposed to do--keep up the momentum. Tom Armstrong (Sean Patrick Flanery of BOONDOCK SAINTS) is a cop who is forced to make a horrible choice. A criminal the police are after, "the Lion", has captured his wife on Christmas Eve and has her tied up in a house rigged with explosives. Either he shoots the detonator or everyone there dies. However, the only way to shoot it is that he has to shoot through his wife, killing her. Either way she dies.
Then, it's eight years later and Armstrong is drinking tequila at a bar in Mexico. An FBI agent Isabel Ordonez (Carmen Serano) shows up and says that the Lion is back in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and they have a lead on capturing him. It's too strong a pull for him, so he agrees to go back as a consultant to the FBI. Of course, he has to face all those memories he was trying to forget and even finds out something that makes his wife's murder all that more terrible. While this ex-cop is trying to redeem himself and capture this guy who destroyed his life, we also find out that The Lion (Joe Pantoliano) is also a master of disguise. He can sneak into any place he wants, unnoticed, and I thought this was very cool aspect of the story. The makeup effects are top notch. He's like a villain from a Batman movie. The Lion is also a very sarcastic villain, which makes a lot of the dialogue extremely entertaining. There's also appearances by 80's genre star Amanda Wyss (original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) and director Bob Kurtzman has a cameo where he gets blown away.
I've enjoyed all of Robert Kurtzman's previous movies, from WISHMASTER to the THE RAGE. While this isn't exactly a horror movie per se it does feature excellent special effects and the film will have you really hating the villain. The end confrontation between the two characters is intense and has a great payoff. Don't be put off by the generic action title, this is a gem of a thriller.
