A news reporter, Jesse Taylor (Erin Karpluk of Being Erica) gets involved with a teenaged computer hacker who has been in contact with a group of radical hackers who are blamed for a recent U.S. missile mishap. But he--and they--have nothing to do with it. Who-or what-is responsible is an artificial intelligence. The worldwide web has become sentient. But it's a little skewed, since the majority of information it sees represents the baser qualities of mankind, from murder to porn. The Jesse and the whiz kid are joined by an FBI agent who believes them and they have to convince the government it's true. They have to avoid everything from cell phones to modern cars because the entity can control them--and it's trying to kill them because they are a threat to its existence. There's a big showdown in the end where they meet one of the original hackers, Lucifer, who faked his own death (Seth Green, who appears for about twenty-minutes). He believes the only way to defeat this A.I is to put it against another one he has created. But the solution comes in an unexpected way, when the teenager sends his mind into the computer's world.
As made for television movies go this is entertaining enough and it basically employs every Canadian actor I've ever seen, from shows as FOREVER KNIGHT to SANCTUARY to THE KILLING. As long as you're not expecting Skynet it's recommended.
