Philip Glenister (LIFE ON MARS, ASHES TO ASHES), doing an American accent, portrays monster hunter Rupert Galvin. He goes back to England and visits Luke Van Helsing, who has become a target for the supernatural. He explains to Luke that his father was a hunter, from a long line of hunters, and that it's now his job to take on.
Of course, Luke's mother knows nothing about this, and she's kept in the dark. Luke's girl friend, Ruby, however, becomes a part of the group. She has feelings for him which he's blind to. And speaking of blind, they are also joined by Mina Harker (Zoe Tapper), a sightless musician. She does end being THE Mina Harker.
There are a variety of creatures that exist, which are classified by numbers, the lowest being the most stupid (trolls), the highest (such as vampires) the most intelligent. They encounter a demon, a pack of werewolf like creatures and of course, vampires. It's the vampires I found the most interesting. In order to kill them you have to inject them with a live piece of their own DNA.
Lots of storyline is crammed into the six episodes and there's a feel that it's glossed over. The biggest problem is that the main character, Luke, isn't all that interesting. Also, much of the music doesn't fit the show, including the opening title sequence. An episode that arbitrarily used Motown tunes throughout had me scratching my head, 'Why?'
Overall, I'm disappointed by this supernatural UK series. It is just not different enough from all the other shows out there.
