This is along the lines of WRONG TURN and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, though a it more convoluted. Daryl Hannah is driving cross country, in honor of her missing husband, and picks up a battered woman one night while driving through Pennsylvania. She explains that she's been running through the woods trying to escape a vicious serial killer and that all her friends were killed. They were from Boston University and were uncovering an indian burial ground in Pennsylvania, in the hopes of stopping a new coal mine, but discover that a lot of those bodies are fresh. There's someone who is doing a heck of a lot of killing.
Before they can say "let's get out of here", the college kids are killed by a crazed masked maniac until that story ends with the hitcher being picked up by Hannah. Then, the movie veers off in a totally different direction that had me going "huh?" as it didn't exactly fit.
