This two-part story wraps up what is basically season five and is David Tennant's last appearance as The Doctor. The Master (John Simm) has managed to return back from the dead, only his regeneration process went awry so now he's burning up his energy--dying--and so is always hungry. He even eats people. He's helped by a rich guy who wants immortality for his daughter and thinks The Master can repair this alien machine they recovered from the now defunct Torchwood facility. Instead, what he does is transform everyone on Earth into copies of himself. Everyone is changed except for Donna Noble and her grandfather. The origin of The Master is revealed and even the Time Lords make an appearance--and it's understandable why The Doctor doesn't want anything to do with them. It does have a sad ending in which he must sacrifice himself to save an innocent guy, though this entire scene is very similar to Spock's death in THE WRATH OF KHAN. Afterwards he is weak and knows he'll soon regenerate--but he doesn't want to lose his current body or personality.
While he still has time, he appears to take one last look at all his recent sidekicks and friends, from Donna Noble finally getting married, to Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith and even Captain Jack Harkness. It also introduces the new, much younger Doctor in the last few minutes as the Tardis goes crashing back down to Earth.
