This is an intteresting version of Bram Stoker's novel, though it takes a lot of liberties with the source material and tries to pack too much information within an hour and a half. It seems as if Dracula has a cult following in England and that cult arranges for him to arrive from Transylvania via the funds of Lord Holmwood, who is desperate to cure the syphilis he was born with. He does not want to die an agonizing, insane death like his father. They tell him Dracula's blood holds the cure. However, he's engaged to Lucy Wesentra (Sophie Myles, who is now on the vampire series MOONLIGHT). Once Dracula arrives via a ship with all hands aboard dead he starts doing what he wants to do, the least is which is to help Lord Holmwood. In fact, he develops a liking to Lucy and her friend Mina. Eventually he kills Lucy and she comes back as a vampire.
Abraham Van Helsing (David Suchet) is a half-crazy guy who was kept prisoner by the cult--and who wants to help Dr. Seward (Tom Burke) slay the Count. Seward has been in love with Lucy for years so this is a matter of revenge.
If I compare it to other Dracula movies, it reminds me of Dan Curtis' DRACULA the most with an inkling of Hammer thrown in.
