In the future, the Americas are a Wasteland where the population of 800 million is holed up giant skyscraper "cities" where there's a lot of lawlessness. Enter the ENFORCERS of the LAW- JUDGES. They are judge, jury, and executioner, right on the spot, when it comes to responding to calls. When Judge Dredd (coolly played by Karl Urban) is called to the scene of a crime where murders have taken place, he and his psychic female colleague-in-training must match wits with a crazed female drug manufacturer that wants them dead at any cost. The drug she makes is called SLO-MO and yep, you guessed it, slows time down for the user, providing many cool user point-of-view sequences. The building is "shuttered up" for "war exercises" and Dredd and his partner can't get out, so they must do battle with the well-armed gangs of thugs and their vicious female leader, known as Ma-Ma. It's almost like a futuristic DIE HARD scenario, mixed liberally with a John Carpenter ASSAULT ON THE PRECINT 13 kind of vibe. Gun battles blaze and there's lots of sneaking down hallways and heavy artillery firing. Dredd is super cool and all business in this incarnation, which is a bit better than the Sly Stallone effort from the 90's [which I feel is a bit underrated, mind you.] The very suave music score to this new DREDD really helps the movie, as it's like a hybrid John Carpenter/Nine Inch Nails score that sets the tone and moves things along. Hats off to Paul Leonard Morgan on this score! If you're looking for a more modern action movie with loads of gore and style overshadowing cheesy CGI, then this one is for you. Really enjoyed this flick, and great to see it catching on in the secondary streaming and DVD markets so nicely since its theatrical run fell so flat. Worthy! Don't let this one fall off your radar if you're an action movie fan or a fan of the comic. HE IS THE LAW!!! DREDD!!!!
