Bruce G. Hallenbeck's newest--and probably best--movie can best be described as DAGON meets LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH.
Kate moves back to her family's country home after getting a divorce and starts seeing some strange things about the nearby lake. The entire opening sequence, with her driving into town, the lake and the Celtic music in the background definitely sets the tone, a la THE WICKER MAN.
Kate meets an Irish neighbor who recounts the local legend to her, about how the town--and church--of Merrill was covered in water when a dam burst. The only thing that signifies that a town was ever there is the very tip of the church steeple protruding from the lake. It seems that the Reverend Merrill had a pagan religion and a part of that was to sacrifice young children.
As the movie progresses and Kate has horrific dreams--and sightings of strange creatures, the more crazy she starts acting and towards the end we're not sure if this is really happening to her or if it's in her mind. The ending fits well and makes you think about the first half of the movie in a different way.
The effects are sparse but effective and I thought those women swimming in the water were extremely creepy.
THE DROWNED is a very low-budget movie but one that's done right.
