Dirty Harry and his .44 Magnum return in the third sequel of the Clint Eastwood action cop franchise. Lots going on in this lean classic- Harry is teamed up with one of the first female Inspectors (essayed well by Tyne Daly, who would go on to a similar character success in TV's CAGNEY AND LACEY) and their chemistry and word play is excellent as Callahan shows her the homicide ropes. Lots of bad guys kidnapping people in this one, and love the opening scene where bad guys holding up a liquor store take hostages and demand a car. Callahan gives em one, driving his police cruiser right through the store's front windows and shooting 'em all dead! One perp is not only shot in the back while running up the stairs, but shot in the back of the BALLS with Callahan's .44! They don't call him Dirty Harry for nothing, right? Harry continues to fight his inept superiors over the tactful way to run hoods out of town, and the meat of the story deals with a renegade terrorist group stealing weapons and kidnapping San Francisco's mayor, demanding a reason for his return. Harry goes to war with these punks and the final confrontation on an abandoned Alcatraz island is tense and action-packed, including good use of LAWS rockets and other weapons. While not quite as superior as MAGNUM FORCE, THE ENFORCER is still a top-of-the-line entry in the Dirty Harry series. Not disappointing in the least and a nostalgic childhood fave of mine that I watched over and over on televised re-runs.
