This zombie movie begins in Iraq, at a military base where something has gone terribly wrong. We see a scientist brutally attacked and eaten by "28 Days Later" type zombies. Then there's a nerdy scientist, Darren Hall, fleeing in a jeep and he's taking a sample of a biological agent with him. We assume that this is what created the zombies, especially when he says "it wasn't ready for human testing". He's able to escape the compound when the perimeter guards are attacked and the whole place is bombed to ash.
Then, he's in the States and takes residence in the basement apartment of a run-down building. He's threatened by some Hispanic guys who are, of course, members of a gang. And he befriends a neighbor, Maddie. She becomes his girlfriend. Meanwhile, the army has tracked him down and they want that serum he stole. Things get out of hand when a homeless guy steals the substance, believing it to be a new drug. He becomes zombified and starts infecting all the other people in the building.
The zombies here are very threatening and there's plenty of blood. I enjoyed the first half of this movie, yet it simply turns into a lesser re-hash of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Part 3, with a downer ending.
Directed by Chris Conlee (ABOMINABLE, BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2)
