In a desolate looking sea-side town devoid of vegetation a boy named Nicolas discovers a dead body while swimming. He tells his mother but she quickly dismisses that it was his imagination. We learn that the only other children are boys Nicolas' age and all the women, who look similar, are the same age as well. Each day Nicolas is given a medicine to take, as his mother says he's sick, but this is really to change him into something not quite human. In fact, the only food she feeds him seems to be a type of worm stew. Eventually all the boys are taken to an old hospital-like building, where the women are dressed like nurses. It's there that they are injected with something in their abdomens, which develop into embryos. Is this the future, where life only exists in the oceans and humans have radically changed how they reproduced? Or is this some type of experiment in an isolated town?
This is an intriguing, dark, humorless movie, along the lines of THE REFLECTING SKIN. I just wish that more of my questions were answered in the end...
