Exorcist: Season One, The (2016)

Exorcist: Season One, The (2016) Ten episode series continues the story from the original 1972 film, taking place in modern day Chicago. Angela Rance (Genna Davis) suspects that eldest of her two young-adult daughters may be possessed by a demon, so she approaches the local parish priest, Father Thomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera of SENSE8) to do something about this. He soon finds out that it's actually the younger daughter who is possessed. But why? Father Tomas enlists the help of Father Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels of ROGUE ONE), a widely experienced exorcist who is retired. We're introduced to Father Marcus in the opening of the series, in which he has un unsuccessful exorcism with a boy in South America (the demon kills the kid). As the episodes progress we find out that other people are being possessed across the city, including priests who are planning on assassinating the Pope when he visits. We also discover that Angela Rance is really Megan from the first EXORCIST movie. Sick of the media frenzy over it when she was a teenager, she changed her name and came up with a new identity. You see, the demon who once possessed her wants her back and is using her innocent daughter to get to her...

The first few episodes are creepy and effective, but as the series progresses it becomes a bit convoluted. I also didn't like how the demon, Pazuzu, was portrayed, as an old creepy guy rather than a demonic looking creature. It seemed do diminish the possessions somehow. However, this sequel is far better than EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC, which they completely ignore in this storyline, and a thousand times better than the recent DAMIEN television show. The series also ends in such as way that it can be continued with the two surviving priests. Recommended.
