This isn't so much a remake of the first FRIDAY THE 13th movie as it is an amalgamation of the first four movies from that original feature series. The first few minutes is the ending of the original #1, then goes to a situation that's seen in parts 3 and 4, with a guy searching for his sister and a group of college students partying at a secluded house in the woods. Unfortunately, this house is near the site of the defunct Camp Crystal Lake. There's a scene where we see that Jason has been worshipping the rotted head of his mother, Mrs. Vorhees, and in another scene, which takes place in an abandoned mine, we see some of the belongings of previous victims, such as a wheelchair, a nod to one of the characters in these earlier movies.
Although Jason is much more intelligent and moves quicker than the original, I didn't find him all that frightening. He comes off much more like LEATHERFACE in the TEXAS CHAINSAW movies In fact, my favorite FRIDAY movies are Part 6: Jason Lives, JASON GOES TO HELL and JASON X, in which he's basically a zombie, not just a deformed masked maniac. Another distraction is the casting of Jared Padelecki as the main character...I kept on waiting for Dean from SUPERNATURAL to show up and give Jason some wisecracks.
The remake isn't a bad movie at all--it's just that I've enjoyed many of the original FRIDAY the 13th movies much more.
