I have read so many different reviews of this one that it has taken me years to work up the balls to rent it. I really wanted to read Peter Straub's book before viewing, but I didn't. Now that I have watched it, it made me want to read the book even more because I'm sure that it has even more detail and scariness. Not that the movie didn't, I loved it. I was very surprised at how good this thing was. Dick Smith's make-ups were classic stuff and very nasty looking. This wasn't gory, but delivered enough scares coupled with a story that sucks you right in. That snowy looking New England setting only aided in making this thing spooky as hell as far cinematography goes. I was a bit scared when I saw the credits riddled with older actors, however the old farts get the job done, very well. Never thought I'd see Fred Astaire stick a knife in somebody's ass, hahahaha! Maybe the old guys were the main reason the film does work so well, cause they all look as if they've been hiding a dark secret their whole life. Now, you do get a few hot sex scenes and some nudie boobs thrown in for spice. So, that was a cool plus I didn't really expect. That old house was the scariest looking building from the outside I've seen in many a movie. The ending was, well you'll have to see for yourself. Watch the film and read the book (if you haven't before) or check 'em out again if it's been awhile and you've forgotten this Ghost Story.
