I always thought of the 60's GREEN HORNET television series as an unfunny version of BATMAN. So I was somewhat skeptical when I first heard about this film version of the superhero that stars Seth Rogen as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet.
It begins with Britt's father being murdered. His father was the workaholic editor of the city's newspaper and it looks as if he was killed because of it. And he was also a dick, always putting his kid down and making him feel like nothing. Now, Britt goes into a slump because he'll never show his father that he'll amount to anything. Then he meets Kato, his father's mechanic and cappucino maker. Britt is impressed by Kato's inventions, particularly "The Black Beauty", a suped-up car. They get the idea to become crim efighters while posing as bad guys. The big bad guy is Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz), who wants nothing more than people to be afraid of him. In fact, he ends up changing is name to Bloodnofsky later in the film. Kato and the Green Hornet mess up his business and he tries to kill them by burying them alive in their car. They escape, which leads up to an ultimate showdown at the newspaper offices...
What really makes this movie work is the interaction of Britt and Kato. They irritate the crap out of one another. What doesn't make the movie work so much, though thankfully this is only a small part of the movie, is Cameron Diaz as the potential love interest of both of them. She looks at least a decade too old for either and is not aging gracefully
It's far better than the original 60's television show and I enjoyed this much better than the similarly themed KICK-ASS movie.
