Eli Roth's homage to 70's Italian cannibal movies succeeds on quite a few levels. First, it provokes the same feeling of dread as those films, especially when we are witness to the live dismemberment of humans and the natives devouring them with relish. Secondly, it updates the scenario very plausibly by having the reason for these civilized people to be in that part of the world-they want to "save" the natives and their habitat from construction crews that are going to plow them over. The matriarchal leader of the tribe is extremely creepy and witch-like, with her one blind eye, and the color the natives paint themselves is unsettling. And yes, there's plenty of gore, courtesy of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger. Highly recommended.
