This is one of the better Will Smith movies in a while and makes up for I AM LEGEND.
This time he's a reluctant, alcoholic superhero who does a tremendous amount of damage in L.A. while begrudgingly helping others. After he saves an PR guy Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) his life starts to change. Ray really believes that Hancock can help change the world for the better and becomes his PR man. First, Hancock does a brief stay in jail (for avoiding hundreds of court cases against him) and is then released by the police commissioner who needs him to stop a robbery. Hancock shows up, sober and in a new costume, and saves the day. HANCOCK is like the GREATEST AMERICAN HERO for the 21st Century.
The main crux of the story is Hancock dealing with who he is. He's immortal but has no memory prior to eight-years ago and believes he's the only one of his kind on Earth. Or is he?
I don't want to spoil the "surprise" of the movie but it actually works and gives a good, solid reason why super heroes do what they do and why they're always alone. As superhero movies go HANCOCK is great. The special effects are top-notch, the story interesting and the actors mesh well together.
I can see this being a decent, entertaining franchise for years to come.
