This story about a fourteen-year-old girl who meets up with a thirty-something year-old-guy isn't quite what I expected from the dvd box cover. In fact, it turns out to be one of the most harrowing suspense/horror thrillers in years.
This young teenager agrees to meet with her internet friend and they end up going back to his house/photo studio where he serves her alcohol. She insists on mixing the drinks though, much to his regret, and after drinking it he falls unconscious and awakens to find himself tied to a chair. She believes that he's the person who has been abducting and killing young women. He adamantly denies this accusation for more than half the movie, so the viewer isn't quite sure who is right and who is wrong. This reminded me a bit of the film DEATH AND THE MAIDEN.
Going along with the current sub-genre of the "Torture movie" (SAW trilogy, HOSTEL, et cetera), there's a scene in HARD CANDY which she wants to castrate him. I won't say if she succeeds in doing this or not but it's not a pleasant film viewing experience and I'm sure this is far more brutal for a guy to watch than it is for a woman.
I do recommend HARD CANDY but before you rent this out be prepared to be put through the meat grinder!
