Although I've never read the comic upon which this is based I was greatly impressed with this superhero/action flick. It is a lot of fun.The movie starts off at the end of World War III, where the allies have come upon a Nazi group in Scotland-who are about to open up a rift in space with the help of Gregori Rasputin. The Nazi's plans are foiled-but not before someTHING comes through the rift. This turns out to be a small demon child, which is soon after named Hellboy. It's adopted by the scientist who discovered him and is raised as a son.We then go to present day where Rasputin had returned and intends upon bringing the Apocalypse. It's up to Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Abraham Sapien (a psychic amphibious guy) and a woman who can create flame-to stop that from happening. They also have to stop these things called Hellhounds, which are breeding like crazy. They look similar to the monster in THE RELIC but have multiple eyes and these squid-like heads.Perlman is really good in the title role-for some reason his acting comes through stronger when he's behind makeup, whether it be in this movie or that BEAUTY & THE BEAST television show from the late 80's.Guillermo Del Toro tops himself with the action and special effects. There is WAY more happening here than in the BLADE movies.
