A mental patient (Patsy Kensit) escapes from her institution and pursues her psychiatrist (Patrick Muldoon) while he's on his vacation. She firmly believes that he is the reincarnation of Jack the Ripper and that she is his girlfriend, Agnes. The beginning of the movie shows her, younger, kidnapped by a gas station attendant who ties her to a bed and shocks her with electricity. He wants her to remember her previous life as he has remembered his (he was one of Jack's prostitute victims in a previous life). She indeed remembers. She also gets the upper hand and escapes. The movie then goes to years later, where it's explained that she has had facial surgery to make her resemble her previous incarnation (and explains why there is a completely different looking actress in the part). After she escapes her confinement she makes it to the island where her psychiatrist is staying-and becomes friends with his wife and daughter when he's called back to the office. It's almost too late when he realizes that she is with his family. There is a final confrontation between Agnes and he-and while he doesn't admit that he was Jack the Ripper in his previous life it's more than implied. He would just rather live his present life and makes that choice. As reincarnation type movies go HELL'S GATE is just 'okay'. I think the problem is with Patsy Kensit-she's too old for the part and they should have kept the first girl who portrayed the character in the rest of the movie.Based on the book by Doug Clegg
