In some regards this sequel is a better movie than the HILLS HAVE EYES remake. It's also totally different than the original THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART II (1985),
A group of misfit National Guard trainees are diverted from their training to check on an Army outpost in the middle of New Mexico, where those mutated cannibalistic humans are living in the desert mountains. However, these creatures are more mutated and ferocious than the others we've seen, perhaps something to do with them living closer to where those nuclear blast sites were. In fact, several of them have very coarse, rock-like looking skin which enables them to camoflauge themselves to the landscape.
One by one the National Guardsmen are picked off and trapped on a high plateau after their climbing ropes are stolen. So, their only course of action for escape is to travel down in the mines. They must also rescue one of the women, who was captured for breeding purposes.
The premise of getting a group of misfit soldiers out in the middle of nowhere is something I've seen in countless low-budget productions and it's the weakest part of the script. However, the movie is fast-paced, the monsters more ferocious and the effects more bloody than in the first movie, so it's more of a rollercoaster ride.
It also ends in such as way that there could indeed be a "HILLS HAVE EYES 3" next year.
