This remake of the 80's classic horror movie succeeds in completely sterilizing what made the original so good, namely a nihilistic and uncompromising point of view. Instead of C. Thomas Howell driving a car by himself across the West, we have a "cutesy" college couple going on a vacation who pick up a hitcher at a gas station after almost running him over on the road. While Sean Bean is well-cast as John Ryder, he's simply not in the movie enough and we get little sense of why he's doing what he's doing. The ending is also quite lame, with the girl confronting the Hitcher.
Don't waste your time with this, watch the original.
