Before the Lord of the Rings there was The Hobbit, the story that comes before and has little Bilbo Baggins finding that nasty old ring (though he doesn't know it at the time). It's a great story on its own and I hope one day we'll get a cool live action film of it. Until then, we have this animated classic that is actually a very good take on Tolkien's story. Though not everything from the book could be included in the 78 minute running time, it touches on most crucial aspects of the tale and works well even though it's basically a children's movie. There are a few deviations from the story and many of the details are trimmed to speed things up, but overall, this is cool and fun to watch. Fans of the book should enjoy and not be too hard on this adaptation. I've always loved it and especially the way the songs from the book are incorporated into the film. Huston's voice of Gandalf is awesome and very good here. Even though this is very condensed compared to the original material, it's still fun and will keep your attention. I hate to say heart-warming (good god!), but it really is and the end has a bit of sadness. Wish they had included Beorn and his great roll in this, but it is what it is. Kids should like it, it's a bit dark in spots though. Adults will get a laugh or two and many will fondly remember this when it was aired on TV. Do we ever get too old for something like The Hobbit? I hope not.
