Martha Beck is an obese nurse, who through a lonely hearts club, meets Raymond Fernandez (Tony LoBianco). He's a scam artist who preys upon desperately lonely women and takes their money. She figures out what he does but doesn't care because she's in love with him. In fact, she starts accompanying him as his 'sister' when he meets his new victims. But when she finds him fooling around with one of the women she swims out into a lake and almost drowns herself. This totally freaks him out and he promises not to mess around on her again. Their first murder happens when Martha gives one of the women far too many sleeping pills to take-and she's found dead riding a bus. Then, there's an old lady who doesn't succumb to the sleeping pills so Martha ends up hitting her in the head with a hammer. The last-and nastiest slaying is when the kill a mother and her young daughter in order to get their money. In the end Martha finds out that her guy has been cheating on her all along when that woman confides in her that she's pregnant by him! Right after the murders she calls the police. The next scene she's in jail and she receives a letter from him-very much like the first letter she every received-which proclaims his love for her. She's satisfied because she knows he can't mess around with another woman in jail.THE HONEYMOON KILLERS is riveting viewing. The black and white film makes it feel gritty and documentary-like and the psychology of the two characters is well-explored.
