Dr. Neimann (Boris Karloff), along with his hunchback assistant Daniel (J. Carroll Naish), escape from an asylum after fifteen years of imprisonment. They return to the doctor's hometown of Visaria to get revenge on the people who committed him in the first place. Along the way they procure a travelling circus, which contains the skeletal remains of Dracula (John Carradine). Neimann pulls the stake out of the skeleton's heart and the vampire comes to life, only to be killed by the sun soon after. Neimann travels to Frankenstein's demolished castle, in hopes of finding the scientist's notes, only to discover the frozen bodies of both the Frankenstein Monster and The Wolfman (last seen in FRANKENSTEIN VS. THE WOLF MAN) as well. He unthaws them both and convinces Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) to help him resurrect the creature to full strength, telling him that he'll then be able to work on a cure for his werewolf curse. There's also a sub-plot, similar to that of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, that has the homicidal Daniel falling in love with a gypsy woman named Ilonka.
The movie is entertaining and paves the way for the next two Universal Classic Monster team-ups (HOUSE OF DRACULA and ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN).
